a playful and elegant collection

Say hello to A Series , Heirloom’s new furniture series for children designed by Swedish designers Matilda Lindblom and Sanna Lindström.

The A series, named after the A shaped back of the chairs, is crammed with both playful and practical features. A few examples:

• Stackable chairs with padded seats and backs.
• A bed with a high, rounded headboard, designed to work as a cosy reading corner for both children and their parents
• A sturdy table with hard-wearing table surface, including four drawers for papers and pencils
• Multifunctional storage box in two sizes with cute rabbit ears in leather on the lid. Works both as storage for toys and as extra seating place.

And that’s what the A series is: all about: a delightful combination of playful, practical features and high-end design. The A series is made of birch and MDF, includes 7 different pieces and is available in any colour.

One interesting point about the bed is that they are currently working on turning it into two chairs once your mini has grown out of it. The series just launched at the Stockholm Furniture Fair 2008.

a rocky collection

PearsonLloyd designed these playful rocking horses under the MO by Martinez Otero brand. With the Rocky Seal, Whale and Dog making the collection, it adds a level of fun to beautiful design. Made from two simple laminated plywood forms, the design appears in a variety of lacquered colours. The seat, handle and foot rest are the defining features of the design. It is also extremely light weight, therefore, easy to transport.

a mod toy box

Kiersten, a.k.a. Mod Mom Furniture, joined forces with her hubby to make The Bertie Box this past week. It is a great addition to her playful signature designs. The bird's (or chick as some see it) orange body pulls out like a puzzle piece (similar to the Owyn Toy Box). The cut-out that looks like a wing is the opening for little hands to lift up. The toy box is made from 1/2 inch adn 3/4 inch birch plywood and sits on casters so it can be moved around easily.

sit and store it

Janne Sipila and Timo Niskala are students at Turku University of Applied Sciences. Together, they designed Cuble. This was part of this years Stockholm Furniture Fair's Your Space, My Cube theme. It is multifunctional for a small space and is made of veneer and aluminium. The table has a slide cover and beneath the cover there is small storage space. Benches has a flip cover and under the covers is a storage space also. Perfect for a kid's space. Vespa upholstery print by Anna Uuttu.

Okay, so this post is all about the picture. How fun and beautiful is this room? The maker of these fine upholstered poufs is called United Leather by Nevotex.

a bit retro

These toddler head boards give me a very retro feeling of inspiration from the 70's.

a highchair?

Teea Jaske and Taina Ollikkala also took part in the Your Space, My Cube theme this year in Stockholm. Say hello to Jocular. It has two function. One is a simple footstool. The second is a highchair? Apparently, you flip it over and it transforms into a highchair. I can't find any pictures of this. Perhaps someone else has pics? The word Jocular means "to joke", is that what they are doing? I'll wait till I can see it in action to judge. (UPDATE: GREG OVER AT DADDYTYPES HAS A SKETCH OF THE HIGHCHAIR. CLICK HERE)

where for art thou

Okay, so its Stockholm day at Minor Details. I found this pic of a children's play kitchen on the front product page of Form o Miljö. However, it's nowhere in their product offerings. It's a very clean lined little kitchen. This company offers school furniture and gear supplies. Perhaps this was for a classroom somewhere?

do you hear what i hear

The Sound Box helps develop children's ability to perceive sounds, build concentration, matching and focusing skills. Children shake wooden cubes to hear each unique rattling sound and find its match. Compare color-coded dots on the bottom for self-correction.

no ordinary animation

Actually, it's called Scanimation. Gallop! : A Scanimation Picture Book by Rufus Butler Seder is amazing. I don't use that word often but I mean it whole heartedly here. The motion graphics are so well done and the choice of animals superb. Employing a patented new technology called Scanimation, each page in this book is a marvel that brings animals, along with one shining star, to life with art that literally moves. Complementing the art is a delightful rhyming text full of simple questions and fun, nonsense replies. Even if you don't have a baby in your house, go and get a copy asap.

handcrafted and toxin free

Different Drummer Workshop is located in the small town of Solon, Maine. Here is where they produce some of the sweetest wooden toys I've seen in a long while. I really like the soft and pureness of their offerings. I was introduced to them by a friend over the weekend (who happens to have the cutest little boy on the planet) and I instantly feel in love. You can purchase here.

a changing unit

When I think of changing tables and how they can become beautiful pieces of useful furniture in my kids room down the line, I'd like to think about the Øresund line of storage units by Karl Andersson. Though these pieces say no mention of adding a changing pad on top of it, I certainly think its a great marriage of form and function with staying power!

a square case

The Square Bookcase, made of powder coated aluminium, makes for one sweet bookcase/toy storage unit for a kid's space. This piece was designed by Anne Linde. I wonder if it's sturdy enough to sit on the floor? If so, it would make three little seats and nice cubby-esc storage for toys and books.

candy at bedtime

Candy was designed by Giuseppe Viganò for Bonaldo.

A bed designed for the children’s room, with completely removable covers and very versatile thanks to the numerous optionals available, like the practical storage space. The space under the bed can hold two drawers, a large storage container or a second bed base.

the house that papa built

I love when my inbox presents a wonderful new thing. This is House for Sale by Studio PAPAS, a Dutch design studio. This house creates a bridge between static furniture and educational playful objects. The house contains 12 blocks, which children can play with. Children between the age of 3 and 12 years old are able to design and build new forms. Older children can make those forms “high in the sky” and younger children can make new forms at floor level. Children can design for example; a spaceship, a race-car, 4 seats with table, a king-figure, a train and other. House for sale is made of foam and finished with a soft-touch coating.

I think the DoNuts table from Extremis could be a great addition to a backyard. I do feel that it should be in the shade. The black inflatable tube could attract alot of heat. Regardless, what an interesting outdoor arts and craft table for kids!
